This week we are starting our office renovations! We need a little more space in order to provide the best care possible for our community, so we are expanding into the building behind us! We are also making some changes in our current space to make it more efficient for patient care.

Lab Draws at Roslindale Pediatrics

As many of you know, Quest Lab is no longer located in our office. However, our nurses and medical assistants continue to provide blood-draw services for lab orders placed by Roslindale Pediatrics providers.

Going forward, we will no longer be able to provide phlebotomy services for lab orders placed by outside specialists. If your child’s specialist orders bloodwork, please contact their office to determine which laboratory they prefer you to use. This may include Quest Diagnostics or Boston Children’s Hospital.

A specific type of liquid ibuprofen has been recalled, here is the information below as per the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Nearly 90,000 bottles of children’s ibuprofen are being recalled due to the presence of unknown substances.

The recall impacts 4-ounce bottles of children’s ibuprofen oral suspension manufactured for Taro Pharmaceuticals USA and distributed nationwide, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recalled bottles are from lots 7261973A and 7261974A with an expiration of Jan. 31, 2027.

Screentime Recommendations

Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed their guidelines on screentime limits for children. Given that screens are so engrained into our daily lives, it can be a challenge to limit screens, but it is more important that the content children are exposed to is appropriate, it is not affecting their behaviors negatively, and they have the time to stay active with sports and screen free activities each day. Hepatitis B Vaccine Safety

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, voted to restrict access to the Hepatitis B Vaccine for newborns. At Roslindale Pediatrics, we strongly agree with the previous recommendations that all newborns receive this vaccine that is extremely safe. This is still recommended by the Mass DPH and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Before this vaccine was implemented, about 18,000 children under the age of 10 were diagnosed with hepatitis B each year. Since then, it is virtually eliminated in children! Recently, the CDC has changed their website to suggest that vaccines and autism may be related by stating that there is no evidenced based medicine to prove against this. There have been many vigorous evidence based studies showing that there is no link between vaccines and autism. Vaccines are one of our best lines of defense to keep our children protected from deadly diseases, and they have been proven by multiple studies to be extremely safe. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to us or bring up any concerns at your child’s next appointment. We are here to make you feel safe and comfortable with your child’s care!

ByHeart Infant Formula Recall

Late Cancellation and No Show Fee

Dear Patients and Families,

One of our main goals at Roslindale Pediatrics is to be readily available in service to our patients. When appointments are cancelled last minute or no-shows occur, a slot that would otherwise go to another patient frequently cannot be filled. While we understand that plans change, we will be instituting a $35 fee* for any cancellations / no-shows that occur within 24 hrs of a scheduled appointment. This policy change is effective October 14, 2025. Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve our availability for our patients.

COVID-19 Vaccine Access

Unfortunately, we are unable to order state funded COVID-10 vaccines for our patients at this time, but Boston Children’s Hospital is offering them for our patients. We are still holding flu vaccine clinics and can offer the flu vaccine at an office visit if you are here or have an upcoming appointment.

Boston Children’s Hospital will host a series of vaccine clinics on the Longwood Campus, taking place most days from now until November 14. Please find the full schedule of BCH Vaccine Clinics here. The clinic is located on the first floor of the hospital. Please direct any questions to the clinic at 617-355-5358. Appointments are not necessary. We have confirmed PPOC patients, including those insured by the ACO, are welcome to attend these clinics. Please note that, due to the lack of state-supplied COVID vaccines, all patients will be informed that their insurance will be billed. While it is likely these vaccines will ultimately be covered by insurance, there is no guarantee commercially insured patients will not have an out-of-pocket expense.

Children under 12 months and children not vaccinated are at the highest risk of contracting the measles virus

Sunscreen and Sun Safety in the Summer: Can Babies Wear Sunscreen?

Babies’ skin is more sensitive to the sun. Infants’ skin is thinner and more permeable, which means their delicate skin is prone to irritation from the elements. Prevent burns and skin damage by applying broad-spectrum sun protection factor (SPF). SPF 15 to 30 is preferred, but you can go up to SPF 50. Sunscreens higher than SPF 50 don’t offer additional protection.

Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outdoors for best effect–even on cloudy days. Up to 80% of ultraviolet (UV) rays get through clouds. When applying sunscreen, pay extra attention to the nose, tips of ears, cheeks, and tops of shoulders. Consider using sunscreen with zinc in it on these visible, more sun-sensitive areas. It doesn’t rub off as quickly and offers more protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or excessive sweating.

What are allergies?

The Northeast region of the U.S. has one of the highest rates of tick bites. However, that doesn't mean your family has to stay indoors for the few glorious months of Northeastern summer. With the proper prevention techniques and tick knowledge, you can enjoy nature with your children safely.

Tick facts

Ticks do not fly or jump.
Ticks can carry diseases, including Lyme disease.
Applying bug spray containing DEET, wearing protective clothing, and performing tick checks after time outdoors can protect your child from tick-borne diseases.
If your child gets bitten by a tick, there is a low risk of Lyme disease transmission if the tick has been attached for less than 36 hours.

Updated COVID-19 Isolation Guidelines

As you may have heard, the CDC and now the Mass DPH have updated their guidelines for the public if you become ill with a respiratory virus. Regardless of which virus (Flu, COVID-19, RSV, etc), they recommend isolation until you are fever free without medication for 24 hours and feeling better. Strep throat is an infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria. Group A Streptococcus (GAS), or Streptococcus pyogenes, is the leading bacterial cause of throat and tonsil infections in children worldwide.

What are the symptoms of strep throat?

Your child may have strep if they have a sore throat, fever, inflamed tonsils, and swollen glands, especially without a runny nose or cough.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Children

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common childhood virus that typically occurs in children under 5 years old. Mouth sores, a rash on the hands and feet, and fever can all be symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth. The main risk is dehydration from fevers and painful sores in the mouth that may make drinking difficult.

It takes 3-6 days from exposure for symptoms to show up. Usually, a fever, sore throat, or cold symptoms like a runny nose come first. Then, a rash with small blisters may appear on the lips, gums, and inside of the mouth. The rash may also appear on the soles of feet, palms of hands, buttocks, and thighs.

How to Get a Nebulizer for Your Child

Nebulizers are one way for children with asthma to take medication. Children can also take asthma medication via a metered-dose inhaler (MDI).

Nebulizers aerosolize liquid asthma medication into an inhalable mist. The nebulized medication is then inhaled through a mouthpiece. Nebulizers come in different shapes, sizes, and designs.

The inhaled steroid medication Flovent was recently discontinued in January. Your pediatrician may prescribe a Flovent alternative. Flovent alternative medications come as inhalers and nebulizers.

Pink Eye in Kids: 3 Types of Conjunctivitis Parents Should Look Out For

Does your child have red, itchy, or watery eyes? It could be pink eye. Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, occurs when the eyelid and eyeball membranes become inflamed. Your child’s eyelids may appear puffy or swollen. Pink eye is usually viral but can also be bacterial or caused by allergies.

What type of pink eye is it?

Viral conjunctivitis can cause eyes to appear swollen, with watery discharge or watering eyes that are sensitive to light. It may only affect one eye. It can also start in one eye and spread to the other within 48 hours. If your child has cold symptoms, such as runny nose and cough, they may have viral conjunctivitis, which can be self-resolving.

Fighting Fevers in Children: Home Care & When to Call Your Doctor

What is a fever?

A fever is the way the body fights an infection. A temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher is considered a fever. Fevers can be caused by viruses, like the cold and flu, or by bacterial infections, like strep throat. Fevers are a sign your child’s immune system is working well.

Ways to take temperatures

There are a few ways to take a temperature.

Rectal temps are the most accurate. For children under 12 months, rectal is the preferred method of taking a temperature.
Forehead and temporal temperatures are the next most accurate. Temporal thermometers measure the temperature across the temporal artery in the forehead. Temporal thermometers are appropriate for all ages.
Oral (under the tongue) and tympanic (ear) temps are also accurate if done properly. Oral temperatures are recommended for 4 years and older. Ear temperatures are most appropriate for ages 6 months and older.
Axillary temperatures (under the armpit) are the least accurate but can still be used to check for a fever. When taking an axillary temperature, add 1 degree when reading the thermometer.
“Tactile” means feeling if your child is warm or feverish and should only be used for children older than 3 months.

How to treat a fever at home

You can treat a fever at home for most age groups by giving antipyretics (medicines that reduce fevers), pushing fluids, and promoting rest.

How to Take Care of a Cold and Cough

It's cold season! That means runny noses, coughs, and even fevers are common. Fortunately, there are many things you can do at home to help your kid feel better. Below, we'll guide you through home care for colds and upper respiratory illnesses and advise when you should call to schedule an appointment.

Treating the viral symptoms of colds

Colds are essentially viral upper respiratory infections. Antibiotics are not helpful, and the only treatment is symptom management. Your child may have a cough, congestion, runny nose, low-grade fever, and fatigue. While it may be distressing to see your child cough or feel sick, there are things you can do at home to improve their symptoms and keep them comfortable.

FDA Warning: possible lead contamination in applesauce

The FDA is warning that 3 brands of cinnamon applesauce pouches, Wanabana, Schnucks, and Weis, may contain lead. Most of these products are not sold in MA. Click here for information from the FDA website. If you have these products at home, discard them or bring them back to the retailer for a refund. If you are concerned that your child has eaten any of these products, you can call us to discuss getting a blood test to check their lead level.

Shortage of new RSV immunization

We are saddened to hear that there is a shortage of the new RSV immunizations for babies, Beyfortus. Based on availability, we may be able to offer this to our vulnerable patients under 11 pounds. You can read more about the shortage here. Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and are hopeful that throughout this RSV season more will be available and will keep our patients updated if so.

There is a new RSV vaccine for pregnant mothers between 32 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. This should provide protection for your newborn, so ask your Ob/Gyn doctor about receiving this.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update

The CDC and FDA have approved a new COVID-19 vaccine for the 23-24 season, and it is recommended for all patients age 6 months and up who have not had a previous COVID-19 vaccine in the past 2 months, or have not had the infection in the past 3 months.

We will have COVID-19 and flu vaccine clinics starting October 14, so keep an eye out for a portal message, and we will be administering them in the office if you are here for an appointment, if they are available that day. They are also readily available at local pharmacies and at Boston Children’s Hospital. Albuterol Recall for Some Inhalers

The FDA recently released a voluntary Albuterol Recall for 6 batches of the inhaler due to a container defect. This means that the medication may not be delivered, but it is not toxic in any way.

If you or your child has an albuterol inhaler, please check the lot number and if it is one of the six listed here on the website, you can call your pharmacy or follow the instructions on the website. If it is NOT listed there, there is no concern and you can continue to use the albuterol inhaler.

Mask Policy Update

Beginning Friday, May 12th, most patients and families will not be required to wear a mask in our office. However, you do still need to wear a mask if you have:

A fever or other flu-like symptoms.
A known COVID-19 infection and are in the isolation period.
A known exposure to COVID-19 within the last 10 days.

Individuals who prefer to wear a mask while in our office regardless of their symptoms or exposures are welcome to do so. In addition, our providers and staff with direct patient contact are happy to wear a mask at your request during visits.

Unfortunately there has been a nationwide shortage of medications for ADHD, or stimulant medications. If you or your child is taking a stimulant medication, we highly recommend calling 7-10 days before you run out of it since it might take that long for it to be in stock again.

Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines for 6 months to 4 years

The FDA and CDC have approved the use of a bivalent vaccine in the 6 month through 4 year population. There are different recommendations as to who is eligible depending on whether your child received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for the initial series.

Pfizer:

If your child has COMPLETED the three-dose series with the Pfizer vaccine, they are NOT currently eligible for a bivalent booster dose. There is research that will be available in January 2023 that will be used to guide if and when a booster with the bivalent vaccine would be recommended.

COVID-19 Bivalent Booster for 5-11 year olds

The CDC and FDA have approved the COVID-19 Bivalent Vaccine for children 5 and older. It is recommended that everyone 5 and older receive the bivalent vaccine booster 2 months after their last vaccine or their last booster. It is NOT recommended for the 1st or 2nd dose in the COVID-19 series.

We will be offering the pfizer COVID-19 bivalent booster. Until we receive the vaccine we will not be offering a booster for age 5-11, as per CDC guidelines. It’s that time of the year again – Flu Vaccine time. We are in the process of planning our flu clinics, which will likely begin in a few weeks on the weekends. In the interim, if you are able to get your flu shot elsewhere, do not hesitate to do so. They are easily available through local pharmacies.

We are also hoping to provide COVID-19 booster shots, including the new bivalent vaccine, at upcoming clinics. We are recommending that those patients eligible for the new bivalent vaccine do get it. We at Roslindale Pediatrics are excited about the FDA’s approval and the CDC’s recommendation for COVID-19 vaccinations for patients 6 months to 5 years old.

At the first possible opportunity, RPA ordered the COVID vaccine for our patients under 5 years. We continue to await shipment, which will not occur until the vaccine has been formally approved and recommended by the FDA and CDC. We anticipate that the vaccine will be shipped and available as soon as next week.

Dr. Stacks was the face and soul of Roslindale Pediatrics. He was an incredibly talented pediatrician who cared deeply for the community he served. We are so proud to have worked with him and learned from him for many years.

Dr. Stacks joined Dr. John Bowers in 1971 as the second pediatrician at Roslindale Pediatrics. He dedicated himself to Roslindale Pediatrics for 45 years. During those years, he touched the lives of thousands of children and their families. If you were lucky enough to have known Dr. Stacks, you remember a clever nickname he gave you, his quick wit, his friendly disposition, and his calm demeanor.

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine approval by FDA on 1/31/22

The FDA has fully approved the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine on January 31, 2022. It meets the rigorous standards for safety, efficacy, and manufacturing quality to ensure that it is safe for patients to receive. It is now referred to as “Spikevax”. It is currently approved for patients age 18 and older, and is given as a primary dose, a second dose at 4 weeks, and booster dose 5 months after the second dose. You can access more information here. Although we do not have a supply of the Spikevax in our office, you can use the vaccine finder website to find a location nearby that offers it. Free at Home COVID-19 Tests

As you may have heard, the government is sending out 4 free rapid antigen at home COVID-19 tests per household. Although they are not as accurate as a molecular test if they result negative, they are just as accurate if they result positive. COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Approved for age 12 and older

The FDA and CDC have both approved a COVID-19 booster for children age 12-15, so now everyone age 12 and over is eligible to receive a booster vaccine 5 months after their second vaccine if they had Pfizer, and 6 months after if they had Moderna (only 18+).

At Roslindale Pediatrics, we highly recommend receiving the booster to make sure our patients are fully protected. We are unable to set up anymore COVID-19 Vaccine clinics but we may be able to offer the vaccine at your child’s well visit and this website makes it easy to schedule a vaccine elsewhere.

New Isolation and Quarantine Guidelines

As of 12/27/21, the CDC has updated their guidelines on how long to isolate when someone has COVID-19 and how long to quarantine if someone is exposed. Please review their new guidelines here. If someone has a positive at home test, this is considered a true positive and a PCR or molecular test is not indicated.

If someone tests positive for COVID-19 without symptoms, they must isolate for 5 days and can come out of isolation on day 6, but must wear a tight fitting mask for the additional 5 days.

FDA approves COVID19 booster for 16 and 17 year olds

It’s Flu Clinic Season – the most wonderful time of the year!

As part of our effort to maintain safety and physical distancing for our patients, we are offering flu vaccines by appointment only as we did last year. We were very pleased with how our outdoor clinics worked last year – and we heard many of you were also happy with the system.

Starting this week, we will have “walk up” outdoor clinics in Billings Field on Thursdays. We will also have weekend availability, likely starting in October. You will be able to schedule appointments for these clinics via MyChart. Only patients of RPA will be able to receive Flu Vaccines.

We know many of you are excited to finally be able to enjoy being outside now with family and friends, but make sure to protect your children from the sun! Apply sunblock with SPF 30+ 15-30 minutes before exposure and reapply every 2 hours and after swimming. Babies under 6 months should avoid direct sunlight since they are too young to use sunblock. Tick Bite - What To Do

With the nicer weather, that means more outdoor time, which unfortunately means a greater risk for tick bites. Make sure after being in any field or wooded area you check yourself and your child head to toe for ticks. If you are worried a tick has been attached for 36 hours or more, please call us. It is very unlikely for Lyme Disease to transmit from a tick bite that is under 36 hours. Click here for a resource by the CDC on what to do if you find a tick attached. Children age 12 and older are now eligible to receive the COVID19 Pfizer Vaccine. You can preregister your child at the mass.gov website. Once you have an appointment booked, you will need to bring a written consent form. We currently do not have a supply of the COVID19 vaccine in our office, so we highly recommend signing up to receive it elsewhere until we have a supply. Please be confident that your healthcare provider will review each lab value and will contact you if there are any concerns. Update on Office Changes

Now that we are starting to see more patients in the office, we want to let you know about the changes we have made to help prevent the spread of COVID19. If you come in for an appointment here is what you can expect:

All patients over age 2 and staff will wear masks at all times in the office except for parts of the exam or diagnostic testing.
When you come for your in office visit, call our office once you are in the parking lot to register by phone
To minimize the amount of patients in the waiting room, you may be asked to wait in your car until we call you when the waiting room is empty.
We are using designated separate rooms for “well visits” and for “sick visits”
Every room will have a thorough cleaning after every patient
Follow up and future appointments will be scheduled in the exam room instead of waiting at the check out desk
We ask that only 1 adult accompanies the patient and no siblings brought along if possible, to minimize amount of people in the office.
Our staff is being screened each day for symptoms and for a fever. If symptomatic, they are not allowed in the office until they are well.
We are still offering Virtual Visits if you prefer this. If you are not already signed up for mychart, give us a call to have your account activated.

We are doing our best at RPA to try to keep you and your children healthy, especially during a pandemic. This is why we have recommended that patients under 2 come in for their appointments to get vaccines, and starting soon we will have older patients due for vaccines coming in as well. We are still making sure that there is little to no waiting in the waiting room, we are cleaning rooms after every patient, and separating rooms and time slots for “well child visits” and “sick child visits”. First and foremost, all of us at Roslindale Pediatrics want to thank you all, our families, for bearing with us and continuing to trust us to care for your families during these incredibly difficult times. We are working diligently to ensure we provide the best and safest care for all of our patients. We continue to look at current recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the Center for Disease Control as we slowly resume in person office visits. Due to concerns for the risk of preventable diseases spreading, such as Measles, Polio, and Pertussis, we are now recommending that our patients who have recently turned 4 and 11 and are due for their annual check up come into the office for their exam and vaccines. If you have already had this appointment virtually we will reach out to you to schedule an appointment for their vaccines. If the appointment is already scheduled we will call you to reschedule it for a timeslot between 11-12 on a Monday, Wednesday, or a Friday starting on May 26th.

To our Roslindale Pediatrics families:

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the utmost goal for all of us at Roslindale Pediatrics is to ensure we provide safe care for all of our patients. We will be making a few changes over the upcoming weeks.

Beginning next week, we will be limiting staff in our office, as well as significantly limit the well children we are bringing into the office. We will continue to see infants and toddlers who are due for immunizations for their well visits. We will see these patients exclusively in the morning, and reserve the afternoons for sick visits.

In an effort to contain COVID-19, we are now offering virtual visits, or telehealth, for patients who do not need to be seen in our office. If you are scheduled for a virtual visit by our office, here is some information you should know:

You can only access this through a smart phone or a tablet, they are not available on a computer.
You must sign up for MyChart through the patient portal and download the MyChart App
- please call our office to have an email sent to you with instructions
- If your child is 13 or older, they must have their own account in order to sign consent
- If your child is under 13, they will need a proxy to register them
  - You must use your own name and DOB to create the account, not your child’s

COVID-19 Update

At Roslindale pediatrics we are concerned for the health and safety of our patients. We continue to monitor the recommendations of the CDC and the Department of Public Health. In an effort to minimize the amount of sick exposure, beginning Monday 3/16/20, we will be moving all of our well visits to morning hours and will reserve our afternoon for sick visits only.

We ask that parents and caregivers with cough or fevers not accompany patients to the office. When at all possible, siblings should be left at home as well.

Electronic Medical Record Working Again!

We just got our new shipment of flu vaccine so we are open for our walk in flu clinic today up until 6pm. As a reminder all patients 6 months and older are encouraged to receive the flu vaccine this season. If it is your child’s first season receiving the flu vaccine he or she will need a booster 1 month after the initial dose.

Since Monday afternoon, the electronic medical record system that we use to schedule appointments and manage our patients' medical information has been offline as the result of a malware attack. While the Boston Children's and PPOC information technology teams are working in concert to restore our system, for the security and privacy of our patients and their families, we will be keeping the system offline until we can be completely certain that it's safe to bring it back online.

As you may have seen in the media, there is an outbreak of a new coronavirus strain in China. The symptoms include fever and cough or shortness of breath.

If you or your child has a fever and cough and has either traveled to Wuhan City, China, or have been exposed to someone who has been there in the past 14 days or to someone who is known to have Coronavirus, please call us. If you are coming in for a visit and have these symptoms please wear a mask upon entering our office and notify staff right away.

Update on HPV Vaccine – only 2 shots for young adolescents

Choosing the “Best” Car Seat

There is no one brand that everyone agrees is “safest” or “best”. The “best” car seat for your baby is one that fits your child’s size and weight, fits in your car, and that you will use correctly on every ride.
The price of the car seat does not usually make a difference in the safety of the seat. Higher prices often mean added features that may or may not make the seat easier to use.
When you purchase a new car seat, make sure you send the registration card to the manufacturer so that they can let you know of any problems or recalls.

Car seat use

Use your car seat on every ride, starting with your baby’s first trip home from the hospital. Help your child form a lifelong habit of buckling up!
Remember: the seat belt holds the car seat in the car and the harness or shield holds your child in the car seat. Unless both are attached snugly, the car seat may not protect your child!!
Look for a car seat with harnesses that are easy to adjust when the seat is in the car.
To keep a newborn from slouching, pad the sides of the seat and between the legs with rolled up diapers, towels or receiving blankets. If your infant’s head flops forward, tilt the seat back until it is level by wedging firm padding under the front of the base of the seat.

Air Bags

Most new cars have air bags for front seat passengers.
Air bags are NOT SAFE when used with rear-facing car seats. If your car has a passenger-side air bag, infant seats (which always face the back of the car) and rear-facing convertible seats MUST be placed in the back seat.
Even a toddler who is in a forward-facing car seat, a booster seat, or a lap/shoulder seat belt is at risk from air bag injuries. The rear seat is the safest place for a child of any age to ride.

Types of Car Seats

These can be used from birth to at least 20 pounds and about 1 year of age. They must then be replaced by a convertible seat when the baby outgrows the seat. Remember, infant seats are always used rear-facing.
Convertible Car Seats
These can be used from birth to about 40 pounds. These are seats that are used rear-facing for infants and forward-facing for toddlers. Infants should ride rear-facing until 2 years old. Recent studies now suggest that the rear-facing position is actually the safest until about age 2. Many convertible car seats will not fit newborn infants well.

Convertible seats have three types of harnesses:
- 5-Point Harness– five straps: two at the shoulders, two at the hips, one at the crotch
- T-Shield- a padded T-shaped or triangular shield attached toshoulder straps that buckles into the seat at the crotch.
- Overhead or Tray-Shield– a padded, tray-like shield that swings down around the child.

About Us

Roslindale Pediatric Associates was founded in the 1950’s by John Bowers, MD who practiced on South Street in Roslindale for many years as a solo practitioner. In 1971, he was joined by Robert Stacks, MD and the practice has been growing ever since. When the new ambulatory office building was built at Faulkner Hospital in 1995, Roslindale Pediatrics moved to this location. In 2016 we moved again, this time to our current location at 2020 Centre Street in West Roxbury.

Each behavioral health consultation begins with an evaluation so we can better understand your child’s developmental history, family context, and current concerns. Depending on the problem, we may offer evidence-based self-help guides; parent consultation and coaching; short term (6-10 sessions) psychotherapy; or referral to a behavioral health or psychiatric provider that can provide more intensive or longer-term support. Colds

These are almost always caused by viruses, so antibiotics do not cure them. Basic treatment consists of extra fluids, rest, elevating the head of the crib or bed, and medication for discomfort or fever (see section on fever and pain). You can expect your child to have an average of 6-8 viral illnesses per year after infancy. A cold can lead to more serious complications, so some signs to watch for are: earache, severe persisting cough, sore throat with fever, redness or pus in the eyes, swelling of the eyelids, difficulty breathing, lethargy, high fever or difficulty feeding. Cold symptoms worsening or not beginning to improve after 7 to 10 days warrant an examination in our office.

Update on Office Changes

Our waiting room is now fully open to all patients (both sick and well) but will also continue to offer parking lot check-in via telephone and MyChart check-in to all patients. We highly encourage the MyChart option to check-in for all well visits (whether from the parking lot or the waiting room) so that all required questionnaires can be completed electronically before the office visit. If you prefer to wait in the parking lot rather than the waiting room, you can still call from your car to check-in and inform the staff that you prefer to be called into the office when your room is ready.
Our staff is being asked to monitor for symptoms. If symptomatic, they are not allowed in the office until they are well or have a negative COVID19 test.
We are still offering Virtual Visits if you prefer this for certain types of appointments. If you are not already signed up for mychart, give us a call to have your account activated.

“Breast is Best”. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners recommends breast milk as the ideal food for the growing infant. We congratulate you on your decision to breast-feed your baby.

When you feed your baby it is important that you be relaxed, rested and have had an adequate fluid intake. Babies are very sensitive to fatigue and tension and may not feed well under these conditions. Drink a full glass of juice, milk or water immediately before or after nursing to insure a good intake.

Sleeping

You will notice that your baby has different stages of sleep. Babies slip in and out of these stages frequently while sleeping. During deep sleep he will not wake easily and not move much. During light sleep you will often notice eye movements, arm and leg movements and sucking. Your baby may be restless and wake from time to time and cry. Give him a chance to go back to sleep if it is not a feeding time. His breathing may be noisy or quiet and this is something you will get used to in time. Wrapping your baby in a blanket may make him feel more comfortable for sleeping. The amount of time a newborn spends sleeping varies greatly. Do not be surprised if your baby sleeps more or less than you had anticipated.

Vaccines

We are dedicated to the health and safety of all our patients and expect that all patients coming to our office receive vaccinations on the schedule that is recommended by the Mass DPH and the AAP. This will allow patients who cannot receive a vaccine due to age or a medical condition to also feel safe coming into our practice.

Unfortunately, kids get sick sometimes and we're here for you when they do. We pride ourselves on making availability for sick visits a high priority in our practice.

Routine sick appointments can be booked through MyChart or by calling our front desk. Expect a brief, focused visit for diagnostic testing, symptom management, and treatment when necessary.

We would ask that anyone with respiratory symptoms or significant exposure to respiratory illnesses (Influenza, RSV, COVD-19, etc) to please wear a mask when possible so that we can keep our staff healthy and ready to serve you.

Expecting Parents

Roslindale Pediatrics is excited to announce the resumption of our prenatal visits! Two weekday evenings per month, our nurse practitioners Katie Williams and Jen Byrne will host informational sessions from 630 - 7 pm and answer questions from new expecting families. We will begin promptly at 6:30 pm. Please call the office during business hours (9 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday) at 617-522-3100 to sign up. We will offer the sessions one Wednesday evening a month and one Thursday evening a month. We look forward to meeting you!

If you are a family with older children looking to transfer into the practice, we are happy to speak to you by phone. Please call the office to set up a phone call with our nurse manager.

We are now booking Well Child Virtual Visits. Please read below before your visit to make sure you are prepared:

We are trying our very best to adapt our care model for our families here at Roslindale Pediatrics, as we know this is a difficult time for everyone. This week, all of our providers became trained in doing virtual visits and have had great success in making these effective.

If your child is 18 months or older and had a check-up scheduled in the last few weeks or has one coming up in the next few weeks, our office staff will be reaching out to see if you prefer a virtual visit. We may need to adjust the time and date of your appointment. If you have any questions about whether or not an online visit is appropriate for your child, please call us to discuss it. Don’t forget to answer unidentified calls because many of our staff members are working to return your messages remotely!
